10 Simple Ways To Celebrate Valentines

It’s February (How did that happen?) and that means two things:

  1. My Husband’s Birthday
  2. VALENTINES!

Valentines gets a bad rap. So many people HATE Valentines. For them its nothing but a consumer ploy to buy all things pink, chocolate and cuddly toys. “There shouldn’t just be one day to show how much you love someone!” they cry, and post on any and all social media posts pertaining to Valentines.

I get it, I do. And in part, I agree.

Valentines has become super commercial, and it should never be the one day a year you think about really showing how much you care for someone, the one day a year you buy flowers, or chocolates. That being said though, I am all for a day dedicated to love! I view it more as a day to celebrate the love in your life in a way that’s bit ‘extra’ to day to day life.

I don’t believe that it has to be a day filled with commercialism either. If you want to go down that route thats absolutely fine, but if you’re after something a little more simple but still heartfelt, read on for my top 10 ways to celebrate Valentines without buying *all the stuff*

Start with Self Care

Valentines is about showing love, and that includes loving yourself! In the busy-ness of life we are all guilty of putting self care on the backburner, and prioritising everything and everyone else above ourselves. How about for one day, you put yourself first? Whether you’re single or in a relationship, make space for self care!

Self care is of course an individual thing, but if you’re in need of some inspiration here are some ideas.

  • Bubblebath
  • Skincare- Facemask, Foot Treatment, Exfoliation, Face Roller, etc
  • Haircare- Hairmask, Oil treatment, Heatless Curls
  • Painting your nails- either at home or at the salon
  • Reading a good book with your favourite drink
  • Spending time outside
  • Visiting your favourite coffee shop and having your coffee inside!
  • Watching your favourite movie or show
  • Going to the cinema, alone!
  • Practicing relaxing Yoga or Pilates

Make Your Favourite Meal

If ever there was a day to make your favourite meal, it’s Valentines! There’s something inherently special about making a favourite dish, whether it’s yours or someone elses (Bonus if it’s a joint favourite!) Taking time out to make and enjoy a special dish is a love language in it’s own right. If you’re looking for a comforting dish, check out my top 5 recipes!

You can go all out- light candles, lay the table, use the ‘best’ crockery that you’ve been saving! Equally, you can keep it low key, if that’s more your style.

If you’re looking to discover a new favourite, why not check out these ideas?

Enjoy Dessert

If you’re going to make a favourite meal, then you may as well go out and enjoy dessert too! If you’re maxed out after making your favourite meal, you can absolutely buy this pre made, or have it delivered. The point is, enjoy it- guilt free (This applies all year round!)

Want to make your own? Nigella has you covered.

Homemade Card

If you aren’t a fan of commerical cards, or if you feel they don’t really express how you feel, why not make your own? You can buy kits that contain everything you need, or head to your local hobby store to get supplies to make your own idea. Etsy is a great place for more quirky cards, if you’re after something more individual and don’t want to make your own.

Hobbycraft has great supplies for cardmaking.

Homemade Gift

If the aisles of teddies, chocolates and other pink gifts don’t speak to you… get creative and make your own! This is a chance to make something really personal that has true meaning for its recipient. It doesn’t have to be complicated or super crafty either. It could be as simple as filling a hamper with your partners favourite snacks, a jar filled with everything to bake brownies, or a simple sewing project.

Day Out

Gift’s not your thing? I get it! We much prefer to have a day out than to buy gifts the majority of the time. You can keep it simple- A walk in a local beauty spot, visiting a local museum or other place of interest. You could also go all out! How about a day trip to somewhere you’ve never been, but really want to go? Maybe even an overnight break? Of course this depends on a variety of factors such as how much time you have, and your budget. Remember- you don’t have to go all out to make it special.

Board Game Night

Time to dust off the board games you own, or splash out on something new! Board games are always a fun way to spend time together. Just be aware if either (or both!) of you are hyper competitive. It should be fun, not life or death!

I’ve got some great recommendations for board games beyond Monopoly and Cluedo in my book.

Movie Night

Valentine’s doesn’t mean you HAVE to watch a Rom Com, but it definitely tops the list for me! It’s your Valentines though- so if Horror is your thing, or Action… go for it! You can make popcorn (Served in cute popcorn holders if you’re feeling extra!) and other snacks so you can have the whole experience. If you’ve got a white wall, you could invest in a projector for that big screen feel.

Romantic Movie Suggestions (All classics, because I’m a millenial!)

  • Notting Hill
  • The Bodyguard
  • City of Angels
  • A Walk to Remember (Hankies at the ready)
  • Sleepless in Seattle
  • When Harry Met Sally
  • Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994)
  • You’ve Got Mail
  • Dirty Dancing
  • Pretty Woman

Take A Class

Similiar to having a day out, taking a class together can be a great way to spend time together, and learn a new skill. You could try a cooking class, cocktail making, all sorts of crafts… or something entirely different! A quick Google should reveal what’s near to you.

Galentines

Single or in a relationship, everyone can enjoy Galentines. Take the day, or the evening, to spend time with your friends and have fun just being in each others company. Whether its a Pizza Party, a Cocktail Night or watching your favourite movies, it’s a great way to catch up amidst our busy lives.

Better Homes has a great guide to hosting the ultimate Galentines. Remember, you don’t have to do everything suggested- rather use it as a springboard for planning your own celebration!

A Final Note

In the words of Miley Cyrus- you can buy yourself flowers!
